Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS)
HFRS is a serious, sometimes fatal, kidney disease. Symptoms of HFRS typically occur within one to two weeks of exposure, but may take as long as 8 weeks in rare cases to develop. The early symptoms of HFRS come on suddenly and include:
- Severe headaches
- Back pain and abdominal pain
- Fever/chills
- Nausea
- Blurred vision
- Dizzyness

Patients may also experience flushing of the face, inflammation or redness of the eyes, or a rash. Later symptoms include:
- Low blood pressure
- Poor blood flow (acute shock)
- Internal bleeding (vascular leakage)
- Acute kidney failure leading to extreme fluid overload Severity of illness differs between types of viruses that cause the disease. Hantaan and Dobrava virus infections are generally severe with 5-15% of patients dying from the disease. Seoul, Saaremaa and Puumala virus infections are generally mild to moderate with less than 1% of patients dying. Recovery may take weeks to months.
